James K. Murphy

November 18, 1944 – October 12, 2009

Resident of Danville, California

On October 12, 2009, our beloved James Keane Murphy peacefully passed away. He was born on November 18, 1944 in Jacksonville, FL to James K. Murphy, Sr. and Marion (Hall) Murphy. Jim spent his childhood years in Binghamton, NY. He received a Navy ROTC scholarship to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. where he studied Engineering. Upon graduation in 1966 he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and spent four years serving his country as an engineer on the USS Ranger, and as Executive Officer of USS Gallup in Vietnam. He married Noël Gary on January 23, 1971, and received his MBA from Cornell Business School in 1972.

Jim’s career in the financial sector, as an information technology executive, took him many places. He worked on Wall Street in New York; in Vancouver B.C.; in Reno, NV; and ultimately served as Vice President of Management Information Services for Bank of America Leasing in San Francisco. Jim was employed by Sun Microsystems on September 11th, 2001, when he escaped from the 25th floor of the south tower of the World Trade Center.

Jim, a true renaissance man, enjoyed cooking gourmet meals, remodeling the house, orating with local musical group, Silver Liners, doing crosswords and Sudoku puzzles and reading. He devoted much time to St. Isidore’s Parish in Danville where he served as Eucharistic minister, RCIA team leader, bible camp counselor, and was a Knight of Columbus- a true man of faith. His sporting passions included the hiking club, Bocce Ball, and daily three mile walks. With the birth of his grandson, Elliott, on Sept. 9th, 2008 his wish of becoming a grandfather was granted.

He is survived by Noel, his loving wife of 38 years, and by children Kevin James and Clare Noel (Ryan), grandson Elliott, sister Kathleen Lansford (Dave), many in-laws, nieces and nephews, and countless devoted friends.
