I'll Forgive Thee, And Forget
By Meredith

        What new conflicting power shall tear,
            This heart already rent?
        One other sorrow it must bear,
        And must another thorn be planted there?
            May pity still prevent!

        Thy gentle nature ne'er would add
            Another grief to mine;
        I know thy heart would rather share
        Alike with me the grief and care;
            Then let the fault be thine.

Notes
The author is probably "Owen Meredith", pseudonym of Edward Robert Bulwar, first Earl of Lytton (1831-1891).  Also known more simply as Robert Lytton , he had been writing poetry since he was about fourteen and was visiting his uncle in Washington, D.C. at about the time Susan was writing her poems.  This poem does not appear in the various collections of Owen Meredith's works.  Another possible author is George Meredith, although this poem has not been found among his extensive works either and seems less like his style.  The clipping is headed "Written for The Flag of Our Union", a publication from which poems were often reprinted in local newspapers.  The Flag of Our Union was a weekly story paper published in Boston by Frederick Gleason.  From January, 1846 until about October, 1870 it printed the works of Poe , Park Benjamin, and Horatio Alger.  Susan's clipping appears to be from the original paper and not one of the local newspaper reprints.  Its date of publication is not known
