Some Notes on Horn Players of the Federal Period
and the Rise of the Symphony Orchestra in America.

The Eberles

For this concert, the society hired two local horn players. At a special meeting on April 27, 1821 (three days after the first performance) the committee to engage professional assistance for the annual concert reported they had engaged two Messrs. Eberle, Horns at $6.00 each.

Three music teachers of this name are found in Philadelphia, Frederick Eberle, Frederick Eberle, Jr and Philip Eberle all residing at 3 North 12th Street, Philadelphia.
[Wilson, 1825, p. ??]
Frederick Eberle had been on the committee at the founding of the Society but none of these became an elected member. Although the Society’s membership records are fairly complete, they unfortunately do not indicate instruments, and it would be some twenty-five years before orchestra personnel were listed in printed concert programs. Therefore the only way to identify individual instrumentalists is from their occasional mention as soloists.
